#STOPETP DAY OF ACTION TARGETS THE PHILADELPHIA ENERGY SOLUTIONS REFINING COMPLEX

South Philadelphia: Close to the crest of the Passyunk Ave bridge, with the Philadelphia Energy Solutions Refining Complex and Schuylkill River in the background, Philadelphia residents alerted passing motorists to the negative impacts of the refinery. This action, led by EDGE Philly, was part of the coordinated national #StopETP Day of Action targeting Energy Transfer Partners, the Texas-based corporation responsible for the Dakota Access Pipeline, Mariner East 2 pipelines in Pennsylvania, and part owner of Philadelphia Energy Solutions.

In the Stop ETP Day of Action (http://stopetp.org/#action), communities across the U.S. were showing the impacts of Energy Transfer Partners’ activities and residents’ willingness to protect their homes and environment. Energy Transfer Partners, an oil and gas midstream and downstream corporation, is the owner of major completed and proposed pipelines across the U.S., including the much-contested Dakota Access and Mariner East 2 pipelines. It also has the worst spills record of all U.S. pipeline companies. Energy Transfer Partners owns a 33% share of Philadelphia Energy Solutions through its subsidiary Sunoco Inc. Since 2012, the refinery has been in an almost continual state of violation of the Clean Air Act. The refinery emitted over 464,000 lbs of toxic air pollution in 2016, making it Philadelphia’s largest single source of air pollution. Communities close to the refinery have higher asthma rates than Philadelphia’s average, which itself is two to three times the national average. Layoffs and benefit cuts led the United Steelworkers Union 10-1 local to threaten a strike at the refinery earlier this summer.

This action made visible some of ETP/PES’s disregard for the health of Philadelphia and demonstrate solidarity with other communities speaking out against ETP’s negative impacts across the country.
