Across Pennsylvania, Resistance to Fossil Fuel Pipelines Grows: Pressure is on Gov. & AG to Act

In response to a three year investigation by Public Herald, revealing 9,000+ hidden citizen complaints and water contamination cases in which the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) committed misconduct: including negligence, misfeasance and malfeasance, Pennsylvania residents have begun a campaign to pressure Attorney General Josh Shapiro to make good on his campaign promises to protect his constituents from mistreatment by the oil and gas industry or PA DEP. The AG’s office has received, and continues to receive, hundreds of calls demanding that he investigate state officials and employees at the DEP for criminal conduct that has left hundreds of families without clean drinking water.

Initially, Shapiro’s office told callers that he did not have the authority to investigate a department of the state government, according to Andrew Geller of EDGE Philly. However, the law is clear that the Attorney General of PA not only has the authority to conduct such an investigation, but in fact has a responsibility to do so.

Communities around the state have called for a week of actions to show the breadth and diversity of pipeline resistance around the state. Huntingdon residents will have a Rally for Raystown Lake to stop the construction of the Mariner East 2 which is under construction and will transport propane at about 1500psi under this Pennsylvania treasure. Pennsylvanians Against Fracking will deliver a petition AG Shapiro by Pennsylvanians Against Fracking.

In addition to their demands to AG Shapiro, supporters are also calling on Governor Tom Wolf to fulfill his duties to protect the residents of the state by stopping all oil & gas construction permits issued by the PA DEP, including the Mariner East 2 being built by Sunoco Logistics LLC, until the investigation is complete. Pennsylvania Student Power Network has kicked off the actions by delivering a letter to the governor urging him to take action on climate justice issues around the state. The group of students representing 19 colleges and universities was led by 23 year-old Ashley Funk, the lead plaintiff in Funk vs Wolf, a lawsuit against the governor alleging that Pennsylvania has failed to meet its obligation to act on climate change.
